Janika knew she wanted to work in a tech role at a top company but faced challenges pivoting into this in-demand career without direct experience in a technical field. Here she talks about how an opportunity to learn on the job changed everything.
I was repeatedly rejected when applying for data jobs
I had trouble pivoting into a tech career without the right college degree, so I decided to do an apprenticeship with Multiverse, providing the perfect opportunity to learn the in-demand skills I needed.
I was repeatedly rejected when applying for data jobs because I didn’t have a technical college degree. The data apprenticeship helped me progress in my career by bridging my technical skills gap and helping me secure my first role at Intermountain Health. Now, I have a year of on-the-job experience, a credential, and a toolbox of data and business skills that I can use to leverage future data-driven opportunities.
I’ve become more business and data-minded
I’ve had a positive impact at the company I work for as a result of my apprenticeship. Through my learning, I’ve cultivated skills that helped me become more business and data-minded. I’ve found areas for improvement, like automating tasks using Python and creating dashboards on Tableau for our stakeholders to track performance more effectively.
I immediately applied the skills I learned to my job as a Data Analyst
I prefer learning on the job versus learning in a classroom because I learn better through hands-on experiences. I immediately applied the skills I learned through the apprenticeship curriculum to my job as a Data Analyst.
On-the-job learning allows me to understand new skills better, increase my knowledge retention, and save time. More companies should focus on apprenticeships because it’s a win-win for everyone. Apprenticeships are beneficial for employers and apprentices.
I can use data for good
Since starting the apprenticeship, my biggest achievement was using data analytics to support highly impactful projects that provide our patient-facing caregivers with the tools to give the best care to our patients. As a Data Analyst, I can use data for good to help solve problems and advance our mission.
